HAPPY NEW YEAR!

Welcome
| | Welcome!

Members and guests at our annual Holiday Party in December had a festive time eating, socializing and opening their White Elephant gifts. The most fun was "stealing" gifts from each other. A favorite was a coveted Scottish hat and scarf.
The exciting news of the season was that Chuck and Katie won the GEELA award for their environmental design of Wolf Creek Lodge! For more on that, read Magdalene's story below.
The New Year brings the excitement of moving into Wolf Creek Lodge in the summer and the continued realization of our dream. Katie's story below will bring you up to date. We are looking for six special individuals or couples to join our community and make the remaining six homes their own.

Year End Construction Update
By Katie McCamant
Well, the dry fall helped us recover from last year's rainy winter. The last floor slab was poured just before Christmas-under the common house section of the building. Reaching this critical milestone means that the rains will have much less effect on construction moving forward. After the New Year's holiday, the crew will be prepping the upper road for winter. By the end of January, we should see the walls of the Lodge going up. Two thousand twelve promises to be an exciting time, as we watch our long awaited Lodge go 3-D and are finally able to take in the beautiful view of the trees from the 3rd floor balcony!

A Very Special Event for Wolf Creek Lodge
By Magdalene Jaeckel
On December 13, 2011, a small contingent from WCL travelled to Sacramento to receive the prestigious GEELA award. GEELA stands for Governor's Environmental and Economic Leadership. Our architects, Chuck Durrett and Katie McCamant, won this award for their outstanding design of Wolf Creek Lodge: an energy efficient building located within walking distance to amenities and public transportation, situated on a 7.9 acre site, one-third of which is dedicated open space.
It was a rewarding and fun experience for all of us. The Nature Conservancy sponsored the event and provided excellent food and drinks to put everyone in a festive mood. We were given a colorful brochure that listed all sixteen California enterprises that won the award. We were not the only one, but we were in illustrious company.
Our group was invited to join Chuck and Katie on stage to receive the honor. At the end of the evening, some of us were able to shake hands with California Governor Jerry Brown, who was at hand to congratulate all who worked "for protecting and enhancing the environment while at the same time promoting economic growth in California." We are very proud of our architects for their vision and hard work. Katie eloquently expressed her appreciation for our group and our determination to stick together through difficult times to make the dream of Wolf Creek Lodge a reality.

Krista Ericson and Mike Contino
Krista: I was born in southern California and grew up enjoying the beaches of Santa Monica and Malibu. My family moved to the SF Peninsula where I went to high school before returning to Claremont to attend Pitzer College. I did a lot of singing including some with Guy Carawan, a preeminent folk singer of the day, and earned my B.A. in Folklife Studies. Along the way I spent a semester in Appalachia and got very involved in health care and women's rights issues.
Mike: I was born and raised in inner-city Philadelphia, got a B.A in Philosophy and concomitantly earned my M.A. in Mathematics at Villanova U. I ran some student community involvement programs and talked about the possibility of co-housing with college friends (although the term didn't yet exist). I then moved to Claremont Graduate School for work on a Math Ph.D. and to experience the 60s in So Cal. Since it was already the early 70s this merely confirmed my life-long membership in the American Procrastinator's Society. I became one of the original "Faculty in Residence" at Pitzer (translation: I was a dorm mother, but that's a story for another time), where I met and fell in love with Krista.
