The Yuba River – My Playground

Yuba River 1I live within a fifteen minute drive of the south fork of the mighty Yuba River and love to visit it regularly.

When I move into Wolf Creek Lodge, I’ll be a smidgeon further away, but I’ll have lots of at-the-ready fellow outdoors people as companions to hike, swim, sunbathe and explore the flowers and weeds (medicinal herbs) along this magnificent watershed. All I’ll have to do is say at dinner, “I’m heading for the river tomorrow; come on along,” and a handful of cohousing buddies will eagerly plan carpooling and bag lunches.

At least that’s my fantasy.

Yuba River 2I’ve been hiking the Yuba ever since I moved to Nevada County in northern California twenty-seven years ago. Originally a Connecticut Yankee, I moved to the San Francisco Bay Area in 1969 from which I started exploring the foothills of the Sierra Nevada, to which I’d eventually move. The breathtaking Yuba became my touchstone: the power of it in spring runoff; the massive grey granite boulders; the icy coldness of the water, always bringing gasps from adventurers plunging into emerald green swimming holes.

  1. I totally agree. The Yuba River is one of the great assets of living in Nevada County. I go there for spiritual renewal all thru the seasons.
