Claire on Castle Peak

August 17, 2012

Four Wolf Creek Lodge members hiked from the Boreal/Castle Peak I80 off ramp at Donner Summit to the top of Castle Peak. Here is a picture of Claire on an outcrop on the way down. We recommend the route: start on dirt road, quickly turn right to the PCT to Castle Pass, scale the peak, […]

A Truckee Garden

July 6, 2012

See a picture of part of your Landscape Point Person’s Truckee Garden.  Remember there was snow here until May 30th and there are now deer who are inclined to eat everything except the rocks.  I wonder what she will be able to do, with your help, at Wolf Creek Lodge when we move in.

Speading the Word in Sonora

July 2, 2012

The Wolf Creek Lodge Marketing team continues to search for opportunities to spread the word about (senior) cohousing and Wolf Creek Lodge. The Unitarian Universalist Fellowship of Tuolumne County invited Claire and Bob Miller to spend a weekend in Sonora, CA talking about senior cohousing. First on Saturday Bob Miller, with Claire’s help, presented to […]

Sierra Hiking Season

May 23, 2012

Wolf Creek Lodgers are active hiking the trails around Grass Valley and Nevada City.  For variety the great hiking trails close to Donner Summit are less than an hour’s drive from Wolf Creek Lodge.  At this time of the year hikers are asking if the trails are open or are they still obstructed by the […]

The Cohousing Company is hosting a “Senior Cohousing Group Facilitation Workshop” this week at Nevada City Cohousing. New Member Spotlight on Bill Jones

April 7, 2012

As retirement was approaching I was looking for a place to live as well as a way to retire. Since I had Park housing, when I left my job I had to leave my home. I had been looking at cohousing possibilities for some time. I took cohousing tours in Santa Rosa, Cotati, and Sebastopol. Also, some places in Portland and Tucson were appealing. I was on the Wolf Creek Lodge newsletter email list for a year before I visited in February, March, and April. I joined in May 2011.

Claire skate skiing at the cross country center

Winter sports around Donner Summit are only an hour’s drive from Wolf Creek Lodge. Last year there was abundant snowfall in the northern Sierras; this year it’s just the opposite. There is far less snow than usual. However, there has been the opportunity to go both downhill and cross country skiing. The downhill is mainly restricted to groomed trails. Those that like to jump off cliffs into deep powder have been rather frustrated. The cross-country skiing on groomed trails has been fine, but the available trails are somewhat restricted, and there are places were the snow is thin or icy. As each day passes without snow it becomes more difficult to reach the good snow. So check first, but certainly come out and ski.

WCL enjoying MusicaliTEA

Several lucky lodgers plus friends spent a delightful afternoon on Sunday, January 22 at the 2nd annual MusicaliTea, a benefit event for the Sierra Master Chorale presented by InConcert Sierra . Sweet music and hot tea, what could be better in the wintry cold of January?

February at Wolf Creek Lodge

February 6, 2012

According to a 2009 article in The New York Times, “Researchers are only now starting to pay attention to the importance of friendship and social networks in overall health. A 10-year Australian study found that older people with a large circle of friends were 22 percent less likely to die during the study period than those with fewer friends . . . [and] Harvard researchers reported that strong social ties could promote brain health as we age.”
