Wolf Creek Lodge, a Fire Safe Community by Magdalene Jaeckel

October 6, 2011

I recently read that it is becoming increasingly difficult for homeowners in California to obtain fire insurance. There have been huge wildfires in the Lake Tahoe area and in other areas blessed with beautiful forests. Of course, people love to live among the trees, which makes them feel protected, private and close to nature.

However it can become dangerous as well as costly. The extremely dry conditions during the summer are a constant warning to be careful with fire.  Homeowners are required to create a “fire safe zone” around their homes and maintain it year after ear.

The insurance companies are now checking also how far your house is away from the nearest fire station and whether you live on a narrow, winding road. And they are raising their premiums. I am thinking how good we have it at Wolf Creek Lodge. Our building sits on a lot with a view of beautiful trees and access to a living brook. But we are far away enough from the trees, so that there will never be a fire danger.

Perhaps this could be another reason to give up your “house in the trees” and move into our friendly cohousing community?
